The abundant extravagance of His love

December 2, 2008

On my way to work this morning God is talking to me about how He sees me and others and what I am unable to see. God sees everything; the truth with one hundred percent accuracy. I can only see so much and the rest is clouded by the untruths, deceptions, and misconceptions that I am still unaware of at this point in time.

Like a clear dawn, bright and beautiful, God’s sight is limitless. Like a cloudy day my sight can be dark, blurred, narrow, cluttered and restircted by my false beliefs and my inability to see beyond them.

I see a young girl crossing the street and I see only her superficial characteristics: gender, race, age, size and clothing. My sight is limited by my inablilty to see beyond the apparent. I realize that God is able to see her without any limits. He sees her promise and her potential because God looks upon her with His perfect love.

With love there is space, room to grow, to become; there is patience and understanding. Love lifts up, binds wounds up; heals, protects and comforts. Love finds and gives joy wherever, whenever and however it is manifested, shown, given, received or accepted. Love is generous, selfless, full of hope and expects the best.

God forgives, forgets and chooses not to dwell on the past, on faults, mistakes or shortcomings and chooses instead to increase relationships and circumstances where love can exist and grow. His love flows in extravagant  abundance, ever increasing and never ceasing to fill up the empty, broken places where it has been missing and deseperately needed.

“We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are” (Anais Nin)

1 Samuel 16:7  “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height,…The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Corinthians 13:4-8a, 13  “Love is patient and kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

1 John 4:8  “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love”

1 John 4:18-19  “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us.”

Ephesians 2: 4-5  “But because of His great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions-it is by grace you have been saved.”

Romans 8:37-39  “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jeremiah 31:3b  ”I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness.”
